Canal - Desire Connection
RTA has proposed to return the Desire streetcar line to service. Made famous by Tennessee Williams’ play, the Desire line proposal has met with more skepticism and opposition than the Canal line did. RTA recently released a Draft Environmental Impact Statement for comment, which details the project.
If the Desire project does go forward, the line will use the Canal trackage between Rampart and Basin Streets as its turnaround. The switch trackage has already been built into the Canal tracks, anticipating the Desire line, so construction will only interfere with the automobile lanes.
