The Canal Street Line

2014 at the foot of Canal Street, heading outbound.
Route Description:

The Canal Line returned to streetcar operations from buses in April of 2004. The streetcars run from the Cemeteries end of Canal Street (Canal Street and City Park Avenue, down the entire length of Canal Street. Upon reaching Canal and the river, the streetcars make a left turn onto the Riverfront Line tracks and head downriver to the end of the Riverfront Line, the French Market Terminal. At the French Market (Esplanade Avenue and the river), the streetcars change direction and return up the Riverfront Line, making a right-turn onto Canal Street, continuing up Canal to the Cemeteries Terminal.

During peak hours, most of the streetcars on the Canal Line are stopped from turning onto Riverfront in a three-track terminal at the foot of Canal. They change direction there and immediately return outbound.

In addition to the main line, some of the cars operate on the Carrollton Spur. On the outbound run, e in four streetcars will turn onto N. Carrollton Avenue and head to a two-track terminal at Beauregard Circle, which is the intersection of N. Carrollton Avenue, City Park Avenue, Esplanade Avenue, and Wisner Blvd.
