The French Market Terminal

2019 and 2014 at the French Market Terminal
Unlike the original Canal Line, the New Canal Line doesn’t end at the foot of Canal Street. Its beginning is at the French Market, at the down river end of the Riverfront line. This has been the Esplanade stop (#1) on the Riverfront line since 1988. The terminal was re-designed last year to accommodate having two lines terminate here. Behind the two cars in the photo above is a double-crossover. Just before that crossover is a switch for the inside track on the right of the photo. The Canal cars will use the left-and-right hand tracks as you see above, and the Riverfront cars will use the center track.

Here is a good shot of the French Market terminal with cars from both lines. Von Dullen car 2019 is on the left and Riverfront cars 463 and 458 on the center track. The gabled roof behind car 458 is the covered stop. The area around the shelter is paved so passengers can walk around a parked Riverfront car to get to the Canal track on the left. The trackage in the foreground is the New Orleans Public Belt RR track that runs the length of the New Orleans riverfront.
