The Foot of Canal

The original Canal line looped around the Liberty Monument at the river, The new line's operation at the river will be more complex, because the riverfront has changed so much since 1964. Instead of simply circling around, The line will merge onto the Riverfront line: Canal cars will follow the Riverfront line on its downriver track to Esplanade. At Esplanade Avenue, they will cross over to the upriver track and change directions for the outbound leg. The trackage at Canal and the River, along with the portion of the Canal line from the River to Baronne Street, was constructed in 1997, to allow the Riverfront "Red Ladies" to return to Carrollton Station.

Historic note. The Liberty Monument, once located at the foot of Canal (at just about the location of the first photo on this page), has been the subject of controversy for decades. The City decided to remove the monument from Canal Street in the 1970s, but a federal judge ordered it returned to a reasonable location near its original spot in the 1990s. That spot is just off of Canal Street, near the Entergy power substation and in front of the Riverfront line (and the Aquarium).
